The Madison Square Garden (MSG) is a multi-purpose indoor arena known as the "World's Most Famous Arena” and is the home of the NHL’s New York Rangers, NBA’s New York Knicks, and NCAA’s St. John's Red Storm. The Madison Square Garden was opened on February 11, 1968, and is the oldest major sporting facility in the New York Metropolitan Area, however, it isn’t the first arena to be built; The venue had many prior homes in Manhattan before making it to the Hudson Yards. When it comes to events this MSG averages around 320 events per year making it one of busiest and famous venues in New York.
MSG has had two major renovations, in 1991 over $200 million dollars was spent adding 89 suites, and bathroom renovations, expanding menus, adding improved ventilation system, and upgrading their seats; They also refurbished both home teams locker rooms, designed by Ellerbe Becket.
In 2011, twenty years later the arena had more renovations, at a cost within the ranges of $1 billion dollars, which took approximately two years to complete. The renovation was done in multiple phases with the majority of the work done during the summer of 2011 to minimize disruptions to the NHL and NBA game seasons. The total cost of its renovation was $1.2 billion dollars, ranking as one of the ten most expensive venues to ever build.
How do I get there?
Madison Square Garden is located at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001 in Midtown Manhattan. There are numerous ways to reach the arena, the first choice is the subway by using the letter A,C,E or number 1,2,3 trains that stop at Pennsylvania Station which is directly below the arena. You could also take letter B,D,F,M,N,Q and R trains to the 34th Street/Herald Square stop and walk one block west to the arena. The bus is another option of transportation, by taking the M4, M10, M16, M34 and Q32 bus to 7th Avenue/Penn Station.
How is the Neighborhood?
The arena is near Manhattan’s Koreatown, which is a small neighborhood with predominantly Korean people where you can find a wide range of restaurants, dessert cafes, karaoke lounges and spas for people to enjoy. Across the street from Koreatown lies one of New York's historic landmarks, the Empire State Building, which was at the considered in the 1930’s as one of the tallest buildings in the United States, and fun fact, this magnificent building was finished at a record-breaking-time of one year and 45 days.
Last, but not least, not too far from Madison Square stands the illustrious Madame Tussauds, located in the grandiose and famous Times Square. Madame Tussauds, is a wax museum that showcases life-size wax replicas of famous Americans and historic icons in themed galleries.
